The Young ChangeMakers Wire

The Young ChangeMakers Wire is an information network for all refugee-background youth which aims to connect them better with the wider Wellington community, including with other young people. Through a monthly newsletter, a social networking site and text messaging we keep refugee-background youth informed about news, events and opportunities in Wellington.

If you know a refugee-background young person who would like to be connected to the network, please get in touch with tessa[at]crf.org.nz.

Kicking It - May 2010

Daniel Gebreezgiher, 20, has just got what many dream of - a football trial with Leeds United. He talks to us about football and making dreams come true.  "I think that success is being in a position to help others, positively influence other, younger, kids and being a role model."

Martine Udahemuka, 26, says she oftens finds her heart back in Rwanda. She has just finished her Masters at Massey University, and spoke at the Refugee Health and Well-being Conference about her thesis and her experiences as a refugee. As a refugee youth who was uplifted from all things familiar in the blink of an eye, I have developed thick, resilient skin and a fighting - in a good way - spirit. I think the latter is true for most refugee-background youth.”

Terefe Ejigu, 20, who lived in Wellington for eight years with his Mum, is studying at East Michigan University, Detroit, thanks to an athletics scholarship.  “I run and I study, that is my life here. I believe I’m a very lucky person and I owe it to my family and friends, because they made my dream come true.”
